An autonomous drone first beat champion human pilots in June 2022, when Swift — built by the University of Zurich with Intel — won 15 of 25 head-to-head races and set the fastest lap, flying on onboard camera and inertial sensing alone. Overtaq records a confirmed crossover on one track: Swift lost 40 per cent of its races and lost its advantage when the lighting changed.
